Differential fees
International students' tuition fees are deregulated by the government. This means that the government does not regulate them, and universities can charge what they want to.
At UofT, the fees are set by Governing Council. International students face very high tuition fees, and they keep going up. They justify these increases by arguing that international students are rich and can thus afford them. We disagree.
Furthermore, international students are not eligible for any basic medical coverage under OHIP. International students live in Canada, contribute to the economy, pay taxes and yet cannot access the most basic education or health care. We think this is wrong.
Did you know that prior to 1983 international students paid the same tuition fees as domestic students? And prior to 1994, international students were eligible for OHIP coverage? This is not the case any longer, even though working international students pay into domestic health taxes.
Help put an end to the differential tuition fees and medical insurance.
